Emergency Eye Care – Wales Eye Care Service (WECS)

Our Optometrists are accredited to provide the Wales Eye Care Service, which provides Eye Health Examinations, funded by the Welsh Assembly, for those who have an urgent eye problem, are at an increased risk of developing an eye disease or would be disproportionately affected by a loss of sight.

Any person can self-refer for an emergency eye examination under WECS if they have an eye problem that requires urgent attention such as:

• A red eye
• A painfull eye
• A sudden change or loss of vision
• Doule vision
• Flashing lights or floating shadows

Your GP can also refer for you for an eye health examination under WECS if they feel it is required.

You may be entitled to a routine eye health examination under WECS if:

• You have sight in one eye only.
• You have a hearing impairment and are profoundly deaf
• You suffer from retinitis pigmentosa.
• You are of Black or Asian ethnicity.
